Cell phone radiation = the new caffeine?

Since Italians spend about 30% of their waking hours using cell phones, it’s not surprising that Italian neuroscientists have taken up studying the effects of serious telefonino usage on the human body. Now they find that cell signals “excite” brain cells. This stunning news apparently has no practical application whatsoever, though, since no one knows yet whether that is “good” excitement or “bad” excitement.

In the meantime, better stick to text messaging (also an Italian addiction) and keep that phone away from the little grey cells, okay?

Wish you were there: Elba

Call in sick and take a day trip to the Isle of Elba. This fantastic island was made famous by Napoleon, but also boasts gorgeous beaches and incredible views.

Get there: Catch the 9:00 ferry from Piombino (a coastal town about an hour and a half from Florence). The ride is about half and hour of fantastic sea views (as long as you’re not prone to seasickness). Take a light sweater for the trip.

What to see: The ferry will drop you at the port of Portoferraio. Head to the centro storico (historic center) and check out Napoleon’s official residence–Villa dei mulini (Windmill villa–it was constructed near some windmills on Napoleon’s arrival). The villa has been turned into a museum filled with period furniture, paintings, weopons, Napoleon’s library, and a fabulous garden with views of the gulf.

Next, take a look at the Teatro dei Vigilanti. This theatre was once a church, but was transformed during Napoleon’s time on the island. It is very impressive, and if you’re lucky, you may be able to catch a show this evening. Call 0565-94-4024 for tickets.

It’s somewhat of a drive, but grab a taxi and head for the Castello del Volterraio. The ruins of this castle are still impressive and are on the top a tall hill overlooking the island. Since you’re already on a fantasy vacation you might as well wander the crumbling stones and pretend to be king for a day.

Last stop before hitting the beach, Napoleon’s country home is a definite must. Impressive and enormous, the villa is surrounded by a lush garden and has been turned into a museum filled with artifacts, art, and frescoes.

And then, go bask in the sun!

See you next week!
